"Contains magnesium" is one of the least useful sentences on a supplement label. Magnesium never comes alone: it is always bonded to something, and that something decides how much you absorb, how your gut feels about it, and whether it belongs in a sleep formula or a laxative aisle.
Three forms dominate the market. Here is the honest comparison.
Magnesium oxide: the label filler
Oxide is magnesium bonded to oxygen. It is cheap and extremely dense in elemental magnesium on paper, which is why it shows up in budget formulas: the label number looks huge.
The catch is absorption. Studies comparing forms have repeatedly put oxide's bioavailability in the low single digits, with one frequently cited comparison estimating around 4 percent. The rest travels through you unabsorbed, pulling water into the bowel as it goes. That is why oxide works fine as an occasional antacid or laxative and poorly as a nightly mineral.
If a sleep formula uses oxide, the big milligram number on the front is doing marketing, not physiology.
Magnesium citrate: absorbed, but with an agenda
Citrate is magnesium bonded to citric acid. Absorption is genuinely better than oxide, and it is a respectable general-purpose form.
Its side effect is the famous one: citrate is osmotically active, so at meaningful doses it loosens the bowel. There is a reason bottles of magnesium citrate solution sit in the constipation section of the pharmacy. Taking it nightly for sleep means negotiating with your gut about the dose, and your gut usually wins.
Magnesium bisglycinate: the form built for nights
Bisglycinate (also written glycinate) is magnesium chelated to two molecules of glycine, an amino acid. The chelation changes everything about how it behaves:
It absorbs through amino acid pathways, so it does not depend on stomach acid the way mineral salts do, and it is far gentler on the bowel. It is the form people can actually take every night at a useful dose.
The glycine is not a passenger.Glycine is itself a calming neurotransmitter, and it has its own body of sleep research where a few grams before bed improved subjective sleep quality. The doses in a magnesium chelate are smaller than those studies used, but the direction of travel is the right one for a night formula: the carrier itself is calm-friendly.
Read the elemental number, not just the compound
One more label trick to know: 800 mg of magnesium bisglycinate is not 800 mg of magnesium. The glycine carrier has weight too, so the compound weight and the elemental mineral weight are two different numbers. On our label, 800 mg of the compound provides about 141 mg of elemental magnesium; the rest of that weight is the glycine.
An honest label tells you both numbers. A vague one prints only the big compound weight and lets you assume it is all mineral, and hopes you never ask.
